Sounds of music fill the back hallway of Lakeside Middle School. At almost any time one enters from the parking lot they will be greeted with the melodies from the music students of Lakeside. Whether it is a band rehearsal, music lessons, or just students practicing, you are sure to hear a tune coming out of the Lakeside Music Room.
The instrumental music program at Lakeside consists of three main performing groups totaling approximately 110 students. These include the 6th Grade Concert Band, 7th and 8th Grade Concert Band, and Jazz Band.
The 6th Grade Concert Band is open to all 6th Grade students who play an instrument. In 6th Grade Concert Band, students are introduced to performing in a full band setting on a regular basis. Music that is performed by this group strives to be appropriate for all talent and ability levels. 6th Grade Concert Band rehearses twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays during 9th period.
The 7th and 8th Grade Concert Band is open to 7th and 8th grade students who have played an instrument before. This band is an ensemble that promotes a deeper understanding of music and musicianship. Students meet Monday through Thursday, which provides them the opportunity to play their instruments nearly everyday. This consistency allows students to develop a higher level on their instruments and leads to a deeper sensitivity of creating a good sound in the full band setting. Music that is performed by this group is also appropriate for all ability levels and spans from multi-cultural music, classical, pop/show tunes, as well as new and original works for concert band. These students are extremely dedicated and meet as a band homeroom starting before school at 7:45 a.m.
The Jazz Band is group that is open to all grade levels and members are approved by the director. Students in Jazz Band learn to perform music in the styles of Swing, Latin, and Rock. Students will also learn the basics of improvisation and take solos. Jazz Band rehearses after school Wednesdays and Thursdays from 3:00 p.m. to 3:45 p.m.
The Lakeside Middle School Chorus is another performing group that includes all grades, (6th, 7th, and 8th). Students in Chorus learn to sing in 2 and 3 part harmony and perform a wide array of styles of music from folk and traditional songs, to jazz and pop music. Chorus meets twice a week during 9th period on Mondays and Wednesdays. There is also an additional Friday morning rehearsal at 7:45 a.m. and recess rehearsals for students who would like to be in chorus, but are unable to attend 9th period due to an acedemic class.
In addition to these performing groups, all students taking an instrument are afforded a small group lesson time. These lessons are held during the student’s practical arts or gym periods and they are permitted to be excused from those classes once a week. In lessons, focus is geared on the nuances of learning their individual instrument. They will study from a lesson book as well as work on scales and concert band music. For any additional information, please consult the Lakeside Band Handbook
