- Principal's Welcome
-
Welcome to the Pompton Lakes High School website. This site has been created and maintained as a source of information for members of our community and other visitors interested in our fine school. It also serves as a distinct sign of our continuous effort to fortify the communication between home and school.
As you embark upon your journey through our website, it is with pride that we inform you about several challenging yet exciting learning opportunities for our students. At present, our comprehensive academic program includes an impressive 16 Advanced Placement (AP) and 15 honors courses as well as a vast array of electives. In keeping with a staunch philosophy of continuous quality improvement, we have bolstered the program of studies through the addition of several new STEM courses, including Robotics and Product Design, AP Computer Science, Javascript, and Python. We are also excited about the development of our Work-Based Learning program, which includes internship and employment opportunities, and the addition of virtual course options for senior students.
In addition to enhancing the program of studies, we have continued to fortify two distinct programs other than AP testing through which students can earn college credits at affordable rates prior to graduating from high school. Students enrolled in select English, science, social studies, and education courses can participate in SHU-PA, Seton Hall University's Project Acceleration. SHU-PA affords students in these ten courses the opportunity to earn their regular high school credits as well as Seton Hall University credits that are transferable to more than 200 colleges and universities. Besides SHU-PA, students can also participate in our Challenger Program. Challenger students can take popular courses such as Psychology, Public Speaking, Computer Concepts, and Criminal Justice on the Wanaque campus of Passaic County Community College and receive both high school elective credits and transferable college credits.
Considering the emphasis, visibility, and use of high stakes standardized testing, we continue to utilize data to inform decisions to meet students' needs. We have raised the bar for all students by enrolling them in academic and advanced mathematics, language arts, science, and social studies courses. Moreover, we have increased the overall rigor of the mathe
matics program by scheduling students to complete college-preparatory courses in algebra, geometry, and advanced algebra by their junior year. Ancillary programs to help students prepare for the PSAT and SAT include an elective semester SAT review course offered during the regular school day and free PSAT/SAT review courses offered outside the regular school day.
As you navigate our website, you will discover that PLHS offers students extensive extracurricular clubs, activities, and programs. The extracurricular program is highlighted by the Pioneer yearbook, The Cardinal Network, Impact literary magazine, and nationally recognized Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) organization. It also includes a spring show group that has filled our auditorium in recent years for Guys and Dolls, Once Upon a Mattress, Into the Woods, and Grease and a proud marching band that has regularly made its mark on the competition circuit. Having categorically established the Eighth Grade Open House and Senior Awards Ceremony, we have added a fall drama to our slate of special events. Moreover, we have continued to advocate lofty standards to receive a testimonial at the traditional Academic Recognition Ceremony, an affair that encapsulates the strong relationship between students and faculty.
During its storied history, Pompton Lakes High School has fashioned a solid reputation for its success in athletics. Many championship banners adorn our gymnasium. During the past few years, our athletes and coach
es have brought home multiple championships. However, we are most proud of our fine record of sportsmanship as recognized by the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA). This recognition is particularly praiseworthy since our teams typically compete deep into the post-season when the stakes are highest and the competition is most intense. I encourage you to follow our athletic teams using the website, which will provide you with up-to-the-minute scheduling information and directions to games.
We appreciate your taking the time to visit our website. If the information provided does not answer all of your questions, please feel free to contact us at 973-835-7100.
